Torrevieja
Torrevieja is situated on the coast in the south of Alicante province and
has a population of 81,080 inhabitants and is contained within
town boundaries which are adjacent to Guardamar del Segura to
the north, Rojales and Benijófar to the west, Montesinos
and San Miguel de Salinas to the southwest and the Orihuela beaches
to the south. Torrevieja is 41 kms away from Alicante some 30
minutes from the airport, 23 kms from Elche to the northwest,
and 53 kms from Murcia in the southeast. Torrevieja has a protected
Natural Park with two salt lakes, and 20 kms of coastline containing
the six beaches of La Mata, Cabo Cervera, Los Locos, El Cura,
Los Náufragos and Ferris.
Torrevieja offers one of the biggest areas for homes some 70,000, which are
used as second homes or for renting. Torrevieja with its great
climate and extensive coastline, together with the friendly and
welcoming character of its inhabitants has become one of the main
tourist destinations of Spain in recent years.
Torrevieja is full of historic-artistic monuments, like The Casino, a modernistic
building of the beginning of this century, with its famous mozarabic
style lounge. The enclosure of the "Eras de la Sal",
ancient salt yard where the popular Habanera and polyphony festivals
are celebrated. The Roman pier at La Mata. The Silleria bridge
in the "Acequion" of Torrevieja. The Archipriestal Church
of the beginning of this century, where the image of the imaculate
conception the towns patron saint, is worshipped.
